Everything that's old is new again
One day, we'll be scoffing at the dating habits of our grandkids and missing the boldness that's only plausible when you have no connection to a face met online. Also, Merrells are back.
The older we get, the more we love to talk about how bad we feel for young people; while some may want to be careless, young, and free again, we’d never want to be young now; current youngsters always lack valuable skills like cursive and basic communication. They can’t date, don’t understand world politics, and can’t read.
Interestingly enough, our complaints coincide with our getting older; the less we are viewed as the cool kids that determine the future, the more problems we have with cool kids that determine the future.
Today’s post serves as a reminder to stop shitting on younger generations because although they like different denim styles, we have more in common than we’d like to admit.
Everything that’s old is new again
Tumblr produced their State of Community to help millennials navigate the chaos that is marketing for Gen Z, but forgot to include useful info. I couldn’t be more tired of the media trying to scare the shit out of us. They led with the stat that “87% of marketers think the landscape of marketing is more chaotic than it’s ever been.” ??? Who are these marketers and how long have they been alive?? The word “chaos” is thrown around far too much; a new social platform is not chaotic, a learning curve is not chaotic, a natural shift in what a new generation wants to see is not chaotic.
We’re still obsessed with leaving our house and talking about it: Substack has been getting fabulous press for their IRL debate series; I went to
’ and thought it was pretty well executed for the first go (who knew NY had an adult sport-agnostic cheer team?)
We just needed to see it differently. I’m late on this, but the No Ordinary Love campaign features six real Hinge love stories brought to life by popular romance writers. This is a great response to people that complain they “don’t want to meet someone on the apps” because it’s not romantic. One day, we’ll be scoffing at the dating habits of our grandkids and missing the boldness that’s only plausible when you have no connection to a face met online. As some of you may know, Hinge has been very good to me and I will always hold it in high regard, no matter how many sea urchins you all seem to encounter.
Rachel Karten thinks brands may need “rapid response” social managers. Her Q3 Social Trend Report stated importance of chronically online brand reps moving quickly on cultural moments. IMO, this is a rebrand of Ad Agency Community Managers, who scrolled twitter for soundbites and made you feel like a D-list celeb. We stepped away from brands needing to be chronically online for a bit as they allowed their influencer budget to do that for them, but consumers realized how much influencers got paid for using a leave-in conditioner and now we’re back to cultivating a brand identity via “social listening.”
How much are influencers getting paid to pretend to like they’d carry the Louis Vuitton neverfull?

Adults need gems on their tees too. Limited Too announced it will be releasing an adult-size collection in the spring of 2025.
We’re allowed to idolize hot people again. After 4 years, the VS Fashion Show is back. Tefi Pessoa and Olivia Culpo are hosting Pink Carpet pre-show, which begins at 6:30 p.m. ET. TYRA BANKS is walking and Cher is headlining!!
Everything old is new again but now it’s shoes
Some people frequently clean out their closet; others, like my mom, have storage units in multiple states because “things always come back in style.” I consider myself a bit of a shoe freak, so here are my takes.
Truuuuust me, it’s a Merrell winter.
This bullet point is sponsored by podiatrists. These Chloe clogettes are such an ode to Dr. Scholl’s. Remember these hotties? They had a moment this summer, but like hello and HI Clog Fall!
I am still beside myself that the woman was walking too fast on the street to take a picture, because now I can’t prove to you all that I saw someone wearing these Minnetonka boots that I had in middle school.

Silicon Bros and Pretty Girls:
Famed fashion sourcer Gab Waller, who's become famous for being able to find sought after luxury goods, announced the first capital raise for her new app, SourcedBy, which will use AI to automate her very manual sourcing process.
Bessette is a new site trying to make sample sales sexy again. I like the bimonthly drop aspect, but I still don’t know what makes them different from existing Sample Sale sites.
Why does Claudia Schiffer make no sense to me? I’m guessing Rhode is trying to expand their audience to include more age demos, but it doesn’t seem realistic.
The new Tracy Anderson workout: former TA instructor and Hamptons resident Meredith Shumway's $55 workout class has a 6-week waitlist. Personally this is a little “everything old is new again” because I took baby ballet classes at the NYC pop up location.
Must Listen! Alyssa Vingan just launched a pod episode with Marta Freedman; Marta, who has the coolest instagram handle of all time, is a brand genius who recently announced she is parting ways with the skincare brand Dieux to focus on Air Milkshake and “other creative endeavors.”

Having the word ‘clogette’ in the same sentence as the phrase ‘ode to Dr. Scholl’s’ is really doing it for me
